Green Infrastructure SPD
About the Green Infrastructure SPD
South Gloucestershire has a rich and varied natural and built environment. However, our wildlife habitats are under considerable pressure. Long term processes of climate change are causing significant impacts. This includes loss of many of our natural habitats like key woodland, wetland and grassland habitats and the links to and from our communities. This is what we term our green infrastructure.
We also know Coronavirus has had an extraordinary impact on all our lives, but one of the positive things to come out of this is a clear demand to have access to green space around us – places to walk, exercise and just ‘be’. It has also shown how everyday connections with nature and seeing nature has made us feel happy and improved our well-being during these difficult times.
That’s why we have prepared and are consulting on the SPD to campion the significance of Green Infrastructure (GI) as critical to create bigger, better, and more joined-up functioning green spaces to ensure an integrated and collaborative approach to the planning for GI in new developments across South Gloucestershire to achieve sustainable communities and quality of life for all by:
- Collating in one place our explanation of and commitment to GI
- Set out a checklist that we expect developers to follow to ensure GI is incorporated effectively and well into new development
- Showcase a number of case studies for what ‘good’ looks like for GI delivery at a range of scales and locations
We also want this SPD to be the ‘bridge’ to the next chapter of our GI corridor thinking that will be delivered through the new Local Plan and commitment to achieve the space that nature needs and we need for nature to be a key part of all our lives

Marking a consultation as relevant to a particular audience indicates that it may be of special relevance to people within that group. It doesn't, however, mean that other groups wont find the consultation of interest - we welcome responses from everybody.
For example, education issues may be of particular interest to Parents & Guardians, and so will be shown to people searching the system for parenting issues, but the views of others (eg: Business, Faith Groups) are also relevant. |
