WECA Metrobus Consolidation Project improvements Emersons Green & Lyde Green

Following the implementation and launch of the current Metrobus services a number of improvements have been examined and are looking to be implemented to existing bus stop infrastructure to improve the service reliability and also increase the bus patronage. This project to make improvements is being managed and led by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) who are also funding the improvements.

There are two schemes proposed within South Gloucestershire and covered by this consultation:

  • Lyde Green – minor re-routing of the existing services within the development and the upgrading of the existing Lyde Green Primary School to Metrobus stop standards
  • Emerald Park layby bus stop improvements.

Lyde Green scheme purpose and proposed scheme

The purpose of this scheme is to provide an additional Metrobus stop within the Lyde Green development in the central area of the development increasing access to and potential patronage of the Metrobus service.

The scheme comprises of upgrading the existing pair of Lyde Green Primary School stops to Metrobus standards. This will mean that the stops will be capable [of being served by two buses at once and will have an increased bus shelter along with iPoint ticket facility including Real Time Information (RTI) screen, CCTV coverage along with bin & Sheffield stand provision.

To enable this there will also be a minor amendment to the Metrobus route within the development meaning that Metrobus buses will travel along Newlands Lane rather than Acorn Drive to enable the vehicles to reach the Primary School stops.

Statement of reasons

Emerald Park layby bus stop purpose and proposed scheme

The purpose of the scheme is both to make it easier for buses to leave the bus stop due to the speed of vehicles on the A4174 and also to improve the safety of users at the bus platform area along with users of the shared use path including cyclists.

By extending the bus stop layby by 19m this will make it easier for buses to leave the bus stop and continue their journey after stopping. This will assist in improving bus punctuality and reliability, especially for metrobus services that use the stop. In addition the width of the shared use path behind the Metrobus stop has been increased to improve flow along with increased verges adjacent to the Metrobus stop. This has been designed to encourage usage of the shared use path by cyclists and deterring travel through the bus platform area reducing potential for collisions between users.

The schemes comprises the conversion of the downstream end of the bus bay from grass verge to carriageway, to allow a greater area for buses to increase speed from stationary and join the existing traffic lane.

The extension of the bus layby is similar to an implemented improvement at A4174 Ring Road, Hambrook, Westbound Bus Stop (east of B4058) which was implemented during 2020/21 financial year. This referred scheme was also consulted on by South Gloucestershire Council and can be viewed on the Council’s Consultation website.

Statement of Reasons

Following the completion of the Detailed Design by late January which will incorporate the outcomes of the consultation the project is anticipating receiving funding approval from WECA’s Joint Committee on the 8th April 2022. This will then lead to construction taking place from July 2022 onwards with the schemes being substantially completed by end of March 2023 due to funding requirements.

Marking a consultation as relevant to a particular audience indicates that it may be of special relevance to people within that group. It doesn't, however, mean that other groups wont find the consultation of interest - we welcome responses from everybody.
For example, education issues may be of particular interest to Parents & Guardians, and so will be shown to people searching the system for parenting issues, but the views of others (eg: Business, Faith Groups) are also relevant.
