YATE & CHIPPING SODBURY - Kennedy Way to Cotswold Road mandatory cycle lanes

Background

Requests by cyclists and the local community have been made for the council to improve cycle routes around Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

The A432 Kennedy Way and Cotswold Road, runs between Yate Town Centre and Smarts Green and acts as a bypass for Chipping Sodbury centre. Originally intended as a high capacity dual carriageway motor vehicle through route, it remains intimidating to cyclists and creates severance to north south journeys.

As a consequence journeys on foot or by bike are less attractive and the sparse number of mainly subway crossings can form a barrier for those with mobility impairments. The layout makes for indirect, incoherent journeys and can give rise to personal safety concerns.

Recent changes in legislation mean that the highway authority no longer need to advertise a Traffic Regulation Order to install a mandatory cycle lane. As a continuation of existing advisory cycle lanes at the Smarts Green end of Cotswold Road it is now proposed to provide mandatory lanes to the west of Hounds Road.

The purpose of the scheme is to:

  • provide a direct, continuous and coherent route for cyclists using Cotswold Road and Kennedy Way from Smarts Green to existing facilities at Yate town centre in both directions.
  • formalise separation between cyclists and motor vehicles;
  • make the road more attractive to cyclists;
  • improve the visibility of cycle lanes and heighten drivers awareness of cyclists presence;
  • support local and national policy to promote active travel by cycling;
  • help address community severance and improve access to Chipping Sodbury School.

The proposed scheme is to:

  • install mandatory cycle lanes on sections of eastbound carriageway where there are none at all presently and no existing demand for on street parking.
  • convert a section of existing advisory cycle lane from Bowling Road Bridge to mandatory cycle lane up to Hounds Road.
  • raise the status of existing sections of westbound advisory cycle lanes by converting them to mandatory cycle lanes, which will be consistent with the newly proposed sections eastbound.
  • extend westbound cycle lanes towards Normandy Road
  • construct an access point to existing off carriageway shared use paths and crossings near Normandy Road.
  • Reallocate dual lane road space which would become single lane with 1.5m minimum cycle lanes alongside, separated by a hatched area buffer of 1m or more.
  • To remove pinch points in the road.
  • Provide the appropriate upright signs in support of the road markings, for cycle lanes that are mandatory at all times.

Further information:

Legitimate access to premises, parking bays and at junctions along the route would be unaffected by this proposal.

Parking would not be allowed within the cycle lanes marked out with a solid white line.

You must not drive a motor vehicle in a mandatory cycle lane.
