YATE & MOOREND - Pre-Planning Application Consultation for proposed solar panel schemes

South Gloucestershire Council’s Climate Change Strategy was adopted in April 2013 and includes ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions and generate energy from renewable sources. In the strategy we made a commitment to assess land suitable for renewable energy developments. As a result we are proposing two ground mounted solar PV (photovoltaic) schemes at land adjoining our Badminton Road Offices in Yate and one on land at Moorend between the M4 and the A4174 Ring Road.

We have taken big steps to reduce costs and energy consumption across our estate by consolidating our buildings and installing energy saving measures and devices and are continuing to do this. Our plans will help us further reduce our running costs, manage the impacts of rising energy prices and reduce our carbon emissions.

The proposed schemes are relatively small compared to the commercial solar schemes already operational within the district. The Badminton Road scheme would cover 2.5 acres and supply electricity directly to our offices equivalent to 50% of our use. Any excess would be sold back to the grid. The Moorend scheme would cover 5 acres and supply electricity equivalent to that used in 195 homes. This would be sold to help offset our energy costs. In comparison, the commercial scheme at Says Court Farm, Westerleigh covers 100 acres. Please view the consultation documents for further details about the proposals.

We are now inviting comments on these proposals to ensure the views of our residents are taken into consideration. Residents living within close proximity to the proposed sites have been contacted directly by post. We are also holding two public exhibitions (please see details below) where representatives of the council and the scheme consultants will be available to answer your questions.

Marking a consultation as relevant to a particular audience indicates that it may be of special relevance to people within that group. It doesn't, however, mean that other groups wont find the consultation of interest - we welcome responses from everybody.
For example, education issues may be of particular interest to Parents & Guardians, and so will be shown to people searching the system for parenting issues, but the views of others (eg: Business, Faith Groups) are also relevant.
Target Audience
  • All residents
  • Councillors / MPs / MEPs
  • Town and Parish Councils
