Consultation on School Term and Holiday Term dates for the academic year 2023-24.

As in previous years, there have been discussions between the Local Authorities in the South West Region in order to enable, as far as possible, common proposed dates.  Given the dates proposed in the region, South Gloucestershire proposes one model for consultation. This model set out a 195 day year within which schools would be responsible for identifying five staff inset days.  The main features of the model are as follows:

  • the first day of the school year is on Friday 1 September 2023;
  • breaks of two full weeks at Christmas and Easter;
  • a five-day break in October, February and May;
  • the last day of the academic year is Tuesday 23 July 2024;
  • the number of broken weeks is limited to two (at the start and end of the school year)

You can ready the proposed term and holiday dates here.

Any comment on this proposal may be sent to South Gloucestershire Council by email to

A final recommended model will be determined by the Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Employment and published on the council website and circulated to schools.

This consultation has now closed and we are analysing the results, which will be published here in due course.

Marking a consultation as relevant to a particular audience indicates that it may be of special relevance to people within that group. It doesn't, however, mean that other groups wont find the consultation of interest - we welcome responses from everybody.
For example, education issues may be of particular interest to Parents & Guardians, and so will be shown to people searching the system for parenting issues, but the views of others (eg: Business, Faith Groups) are also relevant.
